“2024 Ideal City: Research Report on Global Science and Technology Innovation Center Cities Based on Disruptive Index” was Released at the 2024 Pujiang Innovation Forum
Time: 2024-09-18

On the morning of September 8, 2024, the Results Release of the 2024 Pujiang Innovation Forum was held in the Haike Hall of Zhangjiang Science Hall. Attending the release conference were Shi Qian, a member of the Party Group and Vice Chairman of the Shanghai Association for Science and Technology; Liu Qiyan, former deputy director of the Institute of Scientific and Technical Information of China; Xuan Zhaohui, director of the Institute of Technology Forecasting and Statistical Analysis at the Chinese Academy of Science and Technology for Development. Shi Qian delivered an opening speech, and the conference was hosted by Zhu Xueyan, deputy director of the Shanghai Institute for Science of Science.

At the conference, the “2024 Ideal City: Research Report on Global Science and Technology Innovation Center Cities Based on Disruptive Index” was officially launched. Wang Xueying, associate professor of the Innovation Policy Research Department of the Shanghai Institute for Science of Science, presented the report and participated in media interviews. The report was extensively covered by various media outlets, including China News Service, Science and Technology Daily, Shanghai Morning Post, Xinmin Evening News, China News Net, CBN, Shanghai Observer, The Paper, NetEase News, Shanghai Science Popularization Network, Sohu, Sina, Tencent, and others.

The report comprehensively surveys 260,000 highlight papers and over 40 million related citations in eight major scientific fields from 20 global science and technology innovation center cities over the past decade, systematically analyzing the disruptive innovation levels and characteristics of these cities.

The report reveals that among the 20 global science and technology innovation center cities, the top five cities in terms of disruptive innovation are San Francisco, Boston, Seoul, Toronto, and New York. Compared to the significant progress made in the quantity and quality of scientific research achievements, Chinese cities still show relatively weaker performance in disruptive technological innovation. Regarding disruptive indexes across different scientific fields globally, Chinese cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, and Shenzhen perform most prominently in physics. Globally, in terms of leading research institutions in disruptive research, the University of Hong Kong ranks 6th, and ShanghaiTech University ranks 11th. As for the most disruptive scientific fields, life sciences and medical sciences lead across all disciplines. Overall, highly disruptive scientific research worldwide exhibits three main characteristics: first, it delves deeply into fundamental research to reveal deeper aspects of the material world; second, it targets demand and focuses on solving common global challenges; and third, it strengthens interdisciplinary research, spawning new research highlights at the boundaries of traditional disciplines.
